Abstract
25,664. Stringer, H. J. S. Gilbert-, and Druitt, P. W. Nov. 4. Single-type composing and casting machines; justifying type; assembling and clamping matrices.-In machines of the kind described in Specifications 1903/00, 15,468/06, and 20,209/09, expanding spaces are dispensed with, the excess length of the line being measured by mechanism which adjusts the mould to cast spaces of the proper size to justify the line. The matrices are supported in the assemblybox a, Fig. 3, bv a sliding abutment a<1>, which continues to support the line when the assembly-box is moved forwards and the line is transferred to the justifying-race f<1> by the linedrive e. The line is then embraced by the vertically sliding vice c, and the rearward movement of the assembly-box disengages the abutment a<1>, which is returned to initial position by a weight or spring. A length-of-line indicating- rod d is advanced with the abutment as the line assembles, and is disengaged therefrom by the forward movement of the assembly-box. As the abutment returns, it carries back the rod d, and is then re-engaged with it. The adjustable jaw c<2> of the vice is closed on the line of matrices by the elevation of a spring-urged or frictiondriven wedge c<3>. The movement of the wedge is transferred through a rocking beam j, having an adjustable fulcrum, to a mould space-wedge which determines the position of the mouldblade for casting spaces. The position of the fulcrum of the beam j is determined by stops n on a drum n<1>, which is rotated step by step by the space-key. To enable lines of different measure to be composed, the jaw c<2> is adjustable on its spindle c‹, and a scale c<7> is provided. After the measurement of the line, the vice is lowered, and the line-drive advances the line to the separation position. The mould space-wedge is moved into position to engage the mouldblade, when a space is to be cast, by mechanism operated by the matrix-separation pusher, which makes an additional stroke as described in Specification 9932/07. After the separation of the last matrix, the further travel of the linedrive intercepts the separation - pusher, and brings into operation a safety stop-mechanism, such as that described in Specification 15,468/06, whereby the casting-section of the machine is stopped. To obviate the necessity for great accuracy in the construction of the alining-piece on the mould, the alining-notch of the matrix does not engage the edge of the alining-piece until the matrix comes into contact with the mould. The matrix is then raised bv a lever into contact with the alining-piece. To reduce the wear on the matrices when they are being separated for presentation to the mould, the spring plungers carried by the presentation plunger, which exert continuous pressure on the matrix, are replaced by a single spring plunger, which exerts pressure on the matrix only during its travel to and from the mould. The use of non - expanding space - matrices enables the matrix - separation guide - rails to be carried across the end of the matrix raceway f and to form a continuous channel for the separation of the matrices. To prevent the matrices from being prematurely jerked into or towards the re-assembly box, gates are provided which are positively displaced by the plunger that forces the matrices into the box. Magazines for type - bar making machines. Both the character and space matrices are raised to the distributor, and are transferred to the magazine b, Fig. 1, which may have compartments for space-matrices. The space-matrices may be delivered to a channel v communicating with a space-box b<0> which comprises a pair of inclined rails v<0> at right-angles to the channel v.
