Abstract

24,908. Bourdelles, E. Nov. 19, 1909, [Convention date]. Steering and balancing; planes, arrangement of.-The supporting-planes a, a<1> of an aeroplane are pivoted under the control of springs about axes b, b<1> in the line of flight, and actuate elevating or balancing planes in order to obtain longitudinal and lateral balance of the machine. The planes a, a' are provided with levers d, d' connected together on to the frame of the machine by a spring e, and cords m, m<1> connect the levers to drums o, o<1> on front or rear balancing-planes p, p'. The movements of the planes a, a' may be produced manually by elastic cords t, t<1> connected to the levers d, d<1> and to a ring s surrounding a hand-lever r universally mounted. By moving the handlever sideways, the planes a, a', and consequently the planes p, p<1>, are rotated about their pivots in opposite directions for transverse balance; by moving the lever forwards or backwards, the planes are adjusted in the same direction for longitudinal balance. In a modified arrangement, the cords t, t' are dispensed with, and the cords m, m<1>, after passing around the drums o, o<1>, are connected to the ring s. The spring e connecting the levers d, d<1> may be assisted or replaced by one or more springs u, Fig. 4, interposed in a cable v attached to the extremities of the planes and passing over a pulley n on the body. In aeroplanes with superposed planes a, Fig. 2, the planes are hinged by levers h to the body c, and are connected together by struts g. One of the levers h on each side is formed with an extension d to which the controlling-spring e is secured. In a modification in which auxiliary supporting- planes are provided for the automatic actuation of the balancing - planes, the main planes are fixed, and may be provided with cords attached to the extremities of the planes and to the cords m, m<1> for warping the main planes simultaneously with the actuation of the balancing-planes. The balancing-planes may be formed as cells comprising horizontal and vertical planes, and they may be actuated through a servo-motor. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) states also that a single front or rear balancing-plane may be used when only longitudinal balance is provided for. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
