Abstract
24,808. Thompson, W. P., [Wirth, Beck, & Knauss]. Oct. 25. Systems for controlling travel for a fixed distance or number of revolutions; controllers, electric-motor driven; controllers, actuating- mechanism for.-A rudder, crank, or the like 14, Fig. 1, is driven in one direction or the other by a motor 13 connected to it through a train of gearing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. At the limit of its travel, a pin 25 or 26 on the wheel 6 raises a strip 22 off contacts 23, 24, and a resistance 21 is thereby cut into the motor circuit. The movement of the motor torque about the rudder spindle is thus reduced till it is equal to that due to the mechanical resistance encountered. The rudder is returned to its central position when the motor circuit is broken, by a rope 17, which is made fast at one end to a drum 15 on the wheel 3 and at the other to a spring drum 19. Rotation of the train of gear-wheels in either direction strains the spring 18 of the drum 19, and coils up the rope on the drum 15. Instead of cutting-in the choking-resistance in one step, the arm 14 may progressively cut resistance into the motor circuit as it sweeps through its arc of movement. The arm may also be latched in any position by means of a pivoted latch 39, Fig. 3, which is pulled by a spring or by rods 41, 42 on to teeth on one of the gear-wheels, and is lifted off at the will of the operator. A solenoid may be used to operate the latch. When the latch is depressed on to its wheel, the motor circuit is automatically broken at the contacts 43, 44.
