Abstract
24,697. Hughes, T. A. Oct. 24. Steering and balancing.-A differential gear is used in the transmission mechanism for operating lateral balancing-planes and a rudder so that the rudder is actuated whenever the balancing-planes are operated, and the rudder can be operated independently. The outer ring k of the differential gear is connected by a cord m to the rudder. The bevel-wheel a is provided with a pulley around which is passed a cord f connected to the means for operating the balancing - planes. When the pinion a is turned, the outer ring k also rotates and operates the rudder simultaneously with the actuation of the balancing- planes. When the pinion b is turned while the pinion a is fixed, the ring k is turned to actuate the rudder independently of the balancing- planes. In a modified form, the pinion b, Fig. 2, and sleeve d are loosely mounted on a hollow sleeve n, to which the pinion a is secured. A shaft p is connected by a key and keyway to the sleeve n, so that the shaft can slide therethrough to operate an elevator.
