Producers.-In a pro- 'cess for making very hot producer - gas, the larger part of the gas produced passes only through part of the white-hot fuel leaving the producer, at an intermediate valve-controlled outlet h, with a temperature of 1000‹ C. or upwards, while the rest of the gas traverses the whole column of fuel and leaves the producer through a controlling-valve s, after preheating the descending fuel in the upper part of the producer. A secondary supply of air may be introduced into the upper part of the producer to burn the carbon monoxide there, and thus further heat the fuel; and the gas escaping at the top of the producer may be returned to the base and burnt with the air blast introduced by the pipe l.
