Formates and other carboxylates.-Cellulose esters of fatty acids are produced by treating cellulose, oxycellulose, hydrocellulose, cellulose hydrate, &c. with fatty-acid anhydride and a chloride of sulphuric acid in the presence of a diluent. In the case of the formic ester, the concentrated acid is substituted for the anhydride used in other cases, and a diluent is omitted. Suitable chlorides are chlorsulphonic acid, sulphuryl chloride, and pyrosulphuryl chloride. Specification 10,243/03 is referred to.
