Abstract

24,283. Ernst, E. U. G. Nov. 2, 1909, [Convention date]. Producers. - A gas-producing plant comprises two or more generators in which the individual generators are from time to time put into or out of action automatically, subject to the variation in pressure of the gas in the gassupply pipe. The means shown, as an example, for regulating air admission, consists of a water seal, the level of which varies with the pressure of the gas. In one casing 5 are arranged four generators having a common gas space 6 and water seal 7. The lid 10 and hollow ring 11 serve for heating and moistening the air supply. Plates 14-17 divide up the grate box into four spaces, each under its own generator, and the plates are of unequal length, dipping into the water seal 7 to different depths. A pump 28, driven by a motor 29, withdraws the gas through a pipe 26 and drives it to the consumers 33. The gas, when not used, is passed back through the pipe 30, increasing the pressure in the fixed bell 35, and driving the water into the seal 7, causing it to close the air admission to one or more of the generators. When the gas is being used, the pressure in the bell becomes less and water flows into it from the seal, opening the air inlet to each producer in turn. Downdraught or horizontal-draught generators may be used, and they may be arranged in a row, or one below another in zones in a common generator, with several grates at different heights, the admission of air being regulated by throttle valves actuated by the variation in gas pressure in the supply-pipe.
