Guards, controlling.-In an automatic forerunning guard of the kind moving parallel with the tool, the guard is carried and arranged entirely above the work-table, and an extensible coupling-device is inserted between the clutch and its operating - treadle, causing a certain amount of lost motion of the treadle, which is utilized to operate the guard. Fig. 2 is a general view showing the guard g carried by vertical members n sliding in fixed guides and reciprocated by a counterweighted lever l, pivoted at l<1> and connected as shown with a strap j linked directly to the treadle lever. A block k<1> sliding inside the strap actuates the clutch rod k after a certain amount of motion of the strap j and therefore of the guard. Fig. 4 shows another way of actuating the guard from the strap by means of two pivoted slotted levers.
