Abstract
22,792. Smith, E. A. C. Oct. 1, 1909, [Convention date]. Matte processes for copper. - In the Bessemerizing of copper matte in a converter having a non-acid lining, the volume of the air-blast admitted is proportioned to the amount and composition of the acid flux used, so that a thin fluid slag is formed at a temperature insufficient to attack the lining. In the preferred method, a flux containing matte-forming material, such as a siliceous copper ore, is used, and the material is subjected to a series of fractional blows, the slag being removed after each blow and a charge of matte and flux added before the next blow. The last fractional blow prior to the blow to blister copper is so conducted that an amount of iron is left in the matte that is more than sufficient to compensate for the silica in the slag unavoidably left in the converter, in order to prevent " foaming " during the blow to blister copper.
