Acids, distilling and concentrating.-In concentrating nitric or other acid by passing the acid mixed with a hygroscopic agent through an opposing stream of steam, hot air, or other gas which carries off the acid, the acid is introduced at a point between the ends of the common path of the streams of hygroscopic agent and gas. For example, sulphuric acid is introduced at the top of a column and the aqueous acid at a point further down, so that the vaponrs carried off by the hot gas are treated with the hygroscopic agent.
