Abstract

21,579. Say, J. March 16, 1911. Slide valves.-Pressure fluid is prevented from acting on the backs of steam-engine and other slide valves A by wedge-blocks E, which bear against the valve-chest cover, and are adjusted by differential screws e<Î> &c., to bear accurately on the back of the valves. The blocks E are secured in the adjusted position by screws e passing through slots in the back of the valvechest cover D. Any leakage of pressure fluid to the back of the valves can be detected by opening a cock F leading to the hole f. The exhaust pressure is balanced by the pressure on the flanges a of the valves. In Fig. 1, the backs of the block E and the valve A are shown lying in the plane of contact of the valve chest and its cover. When two slide valves are arranged in a chest between two cylinders, two adjustable wedge-blocks E bearing on a fixed central wedge are placed between the valves.
