21,276. Durbin, J. F., and Durbin, V. S. Sept. 13. Couplings, automatic. - Couplings of the knuckle type are provided with means for opening automatically with a minimum of friction. The tongue 8 of the knuckle 7 rests on two inclined surfaces 12, 13 inclined in such a way that the knuckle tends to assume the open position by gravity. The inclinations of these surfaces differ from a to c, Fig. 8, but are the same from c to d. In operation, when the coupler-heads are brought together, the tongue 8 first rises upon the bearing 12 which, being furthest from the pivot, receives less pressure from the tongue. In opening, owing to the play between the knuckle and knuckle - pin, the knuckle descends on the bearing 13. An inclined lip 16 surrounds the lower edge of each knuckle to prevent the knuckle from dropping out of the opposing coupler-head if the draw-bar should be pulled from its bar.
