Abstract

20,145. Williams, N. H. E. Aug. 29. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; propelling.- A flying-machine comprises front and rear supporting-planes E, flapping wings F, F', a rear rudder H, and a propeller G. The planes E comprise series of slats of paper, aluminium, &c. which open as the machine ascends and are pivoted to the frames D, which are hinged at their front edges B and limited as to upward movement by stops C. The slats may be strengthened by an edging of bamboo, aluminium, or paper tubes. The wings also comprise series of slats E<4>, E<5>, which are pivoted to frames F, F', and extend beyond the rear of these frames, so as to provide portions which bend upwards during the downward stroke, thereby imparting a forward, as well as an upward, thrust to the machine. Steering.-The planes E are adapted to be deflected downwards for steering vertically or laterally. A rear rudder comprises a frame H carrying pivoted slats I, which are normally open, but may be closed by means of wires K, K<1>, which extend along each side of the slats, and are connected to arms J, J<1> pivoted to the frame H. For steering, one of the wires K, K<1> is pulled so as to close the slats and turn the frame H as a whole.
