Clutches, friction.-An electro-magnetic friction clutch operated by continuous current or by single-phase or multi-phase alternating current has several separate magnet cores 3, Fig. 1, secured to, or integral with, a disk 1 forming one part of the clutch; the other part 12 is keyed to the shaft 11 and carries an armature ring 9. The disk 1 is freely mounted on a bush 2, and has a cylindrical edge 5 which serves as a protective casing. The cores 3 may be provided with wide pole-shoes 8. The armature 9 is held away from the pole-shoes 8 by springs 13 surrounding pins 10, elastic bushes 14 being provided to allow slight movements of the armature with respect to the disk 12. In the case of a single-phase or multi-phase current, the disk 1, Fig. 5, is formed with a flange 18 supporting an iron-band winding 15 held by bolts 16. The pole-cores 3 are mounted at suitable intervals on the yoke 15. The armature ring is also formed of a winding of iron strip. The ends of the poles may lie on the surface of a cone co-axial with the shaft.
