Abstract

19,564. Savory, C. B. Aug. 20. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus. - Relates to apparatus of the kind in which the liquid &c. is placed in a pycnometer or the like suspended from one end of a lever balance beam, which is balanced by a sliding weight moving over a scale giving a direct reading of the specific gravity. The standard 1 carries a flat plate 4 for supporting the knife-edge 7 of the balance beam, which may be rotatable so as to be turned along the beam for packing. The beam comprises an upper arm 5 and a lower arm 6, which carries a spirit level 8 for indicating whether the beam is horizontal. The pycnometer A, which may consist of a tube with a ground stopper 12 having the usual capillary opening 13, is suspended from a hook 10 supported by a grooved plate resting upon an edge 9 at one end of the beam. A counterpoise 16 adapted to be secured at definite positions on the specific-gravity scale 19 by a screw 18 engaging in holes 20 of the scale slides on an extension 15 of the arm 5. A rider 21 slides on the lower arm 6, which is graduated into subdivisions of the intervals on the upper scale.
