Back-pedalling brake and free-wheel arrangements. - In a free-wheel and back-pedalling brake mechanism for velocipedes &c., wherein the guide-ring or cage of the driving-clutch e is used to apply the brake, the cage f is connected by a ratchet or other one-way clutch i to a sleeve g having cam - surfaces whereby rollers h are pressed outwards to expand an anchored brake sleeve q, s into contact with the hub. The rollers h are mounted in a cage or guide-ring n, and the relative motion between the sleeve g and the rollers, required in braking, may be ensured by friction in the gearing, or by a friction stop arrangement between the ring and the brake sleeve, or by securing the ring to the brake sleeve by a screw t. The sleeve q is prevented from rotation by a wedge connexion r with the cone p. The cage f may be prevented from moving axially by the engagement of the flange f<1> with stops on the driving-sleeve c, or upon the axle. The mechanism permits back-wheeling, the roller clutch e remaining inoperative.
