Abstract
17,653. Smith, M. H., and PhilaÙrian, Ltd. July 25. Propelling; steering. - Helicopters are provided with screws which are tilted by means of pilot screws or planes which act on the air as a fulcrum. Also screws, tilting or fixed, are arranged to give automatic stability. In one form, Fig. II, the car A is suspended from a cross-shaft B at the ends of which are normally vertical shafts C carrying upper and lower propellers D. A pilot screw E is carried by a universal joint F from the top of the shaft C, and can be tilted, as shown, to draw the shaft C from a vertical to an inclined position. Instead of the screw E, one of the propellers D may be inclined, the shaft C being in two parts. Where only two screws are required, they are carried by a thimble H mounted on a ball joint, Fig. VI, the screws being driven in opposite directions. Single screws may be used carried by a cradle L, Fig. VIII, turning about the centre of suspension B. To ensure automatic stability, four sets of screws are employed, Fig. X, with axes inclined towards a point above the centroid of the machine. One or four pilot screws could be used with this arrangement.
