Abstract

13,825. Lake, H. W., [Branch, H. A.]. June 7. Movable-abutment type; cooling parts.-In a rotary blower of the outwardly-sliding abutment type, all parts are water-cooled, and water is sprayed into the compression chamber during compression. The piston consists of a central body 8 secured to or formed in one with the shaft 7 and having two eccentric piston flanges 9, 10 working in annular chambers. Horseshoe shaped abutments 19, 20 are provided so that compression chambers of crescent shape are formed both inside and outside the pistons 9, 10. Stops 43 prevent excessive endlong movement of the abutments. The casing and piston 8 with its flanges 9, 10 have suitable passages, and the abutments 19, 20 and their shoes 17, 18 have suitable grooves in their faces, so that cooling-water may be circulated to every part, including the packing-rings 15. This water is forced under pressure from a water-separator 35 arranged in the discharge main 34, through a pipe 36 and a port 44 into the casing, whence it passes through openings 45 into the rotor. Radial vanes 13 in the rotor aid the circulation to the discharge opening 46. Air-inlet pipes 32 lead to the compressor and communicate with suitable inlet ports 47. Discharge ports 48 connect the chambers with pipes 33 leading to the discharge main 34. Non-return valves provided with dash-pots are fitted in the pipes 33. Water is sprayed into the working chambers through ports 57, which are uncovered by the piston flanges in their rotation. This water is supplied in regulated quantity from chambers 38, which receive their supply from the waterseparator 35. Air cushions in these chambers maintain the requisite pressure. The chamber 35, Fig. 14, in which the water is separated from the discharged air, comprises a bunch of vertical pipes 77 through which water is circulated. Air inlet and outlet ports 71, 72, and also outlet ports 79, 80 for the separated water are provided.
