Abstract

12,467. Macmeikan, J. May 23. Preserving food.-Relating to apparatus for circulating air through chambers, such as those use d for preserving food &c. by means of cooled, moistened, or heated air. The air is admitted to the chamber near the ceiling through rows of trough-shaped inlets 6, which are fitted with similarly shaped sliding dampers 8. The dampers have openings 9 at the bottom and are provided with lugs 10 extending through slots in the inlets 6. To prevent the accumulation of moisture near the ceiling, openings 12 are provided in the inlets. The air is withdrawn from the chamber through rows of vents 13 in the floor, each row being connected to a separate passage 15. The passages 15 communicate with a common passage leading to the suction of a fan 1. The passages 15 are fitted with rotary valves, the shafts of which may be operated bv worm gearing. The valves may be operated alternately, or any one valve may be put out of operation. The valves consist of segmental wings on shafts 18 having wormwheels engaged by worms mounted to slide on a transverse shaft. The air from the chamber may pass through an apparatus 26 for heating, cooling, or moistening the air, or it may be discharged into the atmosphere. The apparatus 26 contains a compartment 27, with which may communicate a cooling-apparatus 30 or a heating-apparatus 34. The cooler consists of a water-spray in a casing. The heater consists of passages fitted with electric lamps.
