Abstract

12,360. Bragge, G. S. May 21. Explosions, preventing in mines; fire - extinguishing by pulverulent material.-A machine for distributing stone dust over the floor, sides, and roof of coal mines &c., for minimizing the danger of explosion, consists of a box-like body a, in which is arranged an inclined vibrating spade or shoot g from which the dust is delivered through an opening f' to a blast-pipe f. This pipe extends beneath the box and terminates in a nozzle f<2>, to which a flexible delivery piece may be attached. The dust is supplied from an external feed-hopper d, from which it passes through a channel d<1> into a hopper c arranged within the box and so on to the shoot g. At the upper end of the channel d<1> is a hand-operated slide e, by means of which the feed-hopper may be cut off, and lower down are a pair of spring-controlled damper-plates n, o, caused to reciprocate by a lever p so as to close the passage d' in turn, and thus maintain a continuous supply of dust to the shoot g while the blast is in operation.
