Theatrical appliances.-In a device for draping tableaux curtains, vertical rods a<1> are pivoted at their upper ends b to the framing at the top of the stage opening, and at their lower ends are loosely attached to the lifting-ropes n<1> at the points where the ropes are secured to the curtains. Toggle levers c<1>, f<1> are secured at their ends to the sides of the stage and to the lower ends of the rods a<1>, and are attached at the joints g<1> to ropes i<1>, which pass over pulleys and are secured to the floor. These ropes i' are of such a length that, when the curtains are dropped, the toggles straighten out, as shown in dotted lines, and the curtains cannot open by rebound. When the curtains are lifted, the winch m is turned to take up the slack of the lifting-ropes n<1>, and at the same time to open the toggle levers by means of a wiper p, which engages the ropes i'. The curtains may then be lifted by continued motion of the winch.
