Abstract

9857. Icre, B. April 22. Paddle - wheels. - Relates to propellers of the kind comprising a series of radial journaled blades located at the end of a hollow rotating shaft, and feathered during the rotation of the shaft by means of rods connecting the inner ends of the blade spindles with levers fitted with rollers running along a cam-groove formed in an adjustable cylinder &c. surrounding the p r o - peller shaft. The blades B, Fig. 1, of which there are six, each operating during one-sixth of a revolution, are provided with stems of increased width towards the parts adjacent to the journaled ends, the edges being sharp to reduce resistance when the blades are feathered. The circumferential portion K<1> of the lower end of the hollow shaft A is of triangular section. The rollers on the levers of the feathering-mechanism run in camgrooves formed in members S, each of which may be caused to slide vertically between guides by means of a lever Z, in order to adjust the direction of thrust of the propeller blades. Pivoted connecting-pieces are arranged between the members 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the propeller is mounted around a central shaft a<1>, and can be moved bodily into a cavity a in the side of the ship by means of screw-and-nut mechanism h, i, k. The cavity a can then be closed by a sliding door d and pumped out in order to facilitate repairs &c. In a modification, the propeller is arranged beneath the hull of a vessel, and can be moved vertically into a recess therein.
