Ball mills.-Ball mills with steps or eccentric plates formed on or fixed to the inside of the drum are made with the eccentricity of the stepsurfaces greater at the inlet end than at the opposite end of the drum, so that the percussive effect on fresh material is greater than on partly-crushed material. The steps are formed of plates F of ploughshare shape, so that they tumble and work the halls from the inlet end towards the delivery end, whence they return along the bottom of the drum. The crushed material may be delivered through holes in the grinding-plates or through apertures between the plates, and the drum may be fitted with rotary screens or combined with a separate sifting-machine. The drum may be constructed with a smooth non-stepped section in series with the grinding-plates at the delivery end.
