Abstract
8971. Ham, F. G. S. April 13. Bucket - elevator apparatus. - Apparatus for raising water, sludge, filter-bed deposits, &c. comprises a chamber provided with a valved air pipe and also a non - return valve or shutter in the base, which prevents the escape of the load. As the chamber 1, Fig. 1, is lowered, water enters past the valves 2 and compresses the air into the upper part and tube 3. Upon opening the valve 5, the rapid escape of air causes water and sludge to rush into the chamber 1, which is then raised by chains or like to the surface for discharging. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the base is closed and ports 8 and shutter 9 substituted for the flap valves. The shutter is carried by rods 10, the feet 11 of which contact with the bottom of the filter-bed before the base of the chamber; the ports 8 are thereby uncovered for the sludge to enter. Compressed air may be employed in the chamber.
