Abstract
8808. Mainguet, H. April 20, 1909, [Convention date]. Steering-gear.-Relates to apparatus for the independent control of three or more steering- members of ships, and comprises a lever a, moveable in two directions about its lower end for operating two of the steering members, on which is mounted a hand-wheel b capable of movement in one, two, or three directions for controlling supplementary steering-members. In one form, the hand-wheel b, Fig. 3, is mounted to rotate about the axis of the lever a, and is provided with a fixed grooved pulley f to which the operating wires e are secured. The wires pass through openings in a bracket g fixed to the lever a and through tubular sheatbs c to the parts to be operated. In another form, the band-wheel b can be inclined also about two horizontal axes at rightangles to one another. The hand-wheel b, Fig. 5, is mounted to rotate on a vertical pivot 10 on a lever k<2> which is centrally pivoted on a lever k<1>. The lever k<1> is mounted to rotate about an axle h' supported in bearings l<1> secured to a four-armed bracket i<1>, i<2> fixed to the top of the universally pivoted lever a. The operating-wires are in the form of Bowden cables, and are attached to the ends of the levers k<1>, k<2> and pass through holes in the ends of the bracket-arms i<1>, i<2> into the tubes c<1>, c<2>. The lever k<2> is formed with an upwardly extending part against which abut the sheaths c of the operating-wire e passing round the pulley f attached to the hand-wheel b.
