Abstract

8318. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., Hadcock, A. G., and Richardson, J. April 6. Mountings.-Relates to high-angle-fire guns for use against dirigible balloons, and consists in mounting, on a frame pivoted on the trunnions, a support for the gunner, elevating and training hand-wheels, and the sight. The frame may carry a support and sight for a gun layer on one side of the gun, and a support and sight for a gun trainer on the other side. Fig. 3 is a side view of the mounting showing a seat h and rests i, j, k provided on each side of a frame e which is loosely mounted on extensions of the trunnion b<1> as shown in section in Fig. 2, and carries a sight f and elevating handwheel g for the gun-layer on one side of the gun, and a sight f<1> and hand-wheel for the gun trainer on the other side of the gun. The guncradle b is connected with the saddle by an elevating screw b<2>, pivoted to the gun-cradle, and connected with a nut, pivotally mounted in the saddle, and rotated for ranging by means of hand-gear m, m<1>, m<2>, on the saddles, a range dial n on the saddle being rotated by an arc b<3> on the gun-cradle. The gun and saddle are elevated together from the handgear g, g<1>, g<2> by rotating a screwed spindle g<4> engaging a nut g<5> on the rotating carriage c. The training-gear operates upon a spindle l<2> and drives a worm c<2>, gearing with a wormwheel d<2> on the fixed carriage.
