Abstract

8140. Heley, E. F. April 4. Feeding-devices for granular and like materials.-In apparatus for cleaning grain, seeds, &c., the hopper which delivers the grain &c. on to the screens or cleaning or separating apparatus is arranged so that the grain having been inserted in the hopper and the flow started, the flow continues until the hopper is empty, whereupon the hopper automatically closes. The hopper A, Fig. 1, is rectangular in section with a sloping bottom A', and is secured to a platform or in a floor B by means of lugs B<1>. A pivoted flap D at the bottom of the hopper carries an extension D<2> with an adjustable weight D', and is operated from the delivery end of the screens by means of a cord E<3> which releases a spring - pressed arm E having a roller E<1> engaging a projection D<4> on the arm D<2>. When the hopper is empty, the flap D rises and the spring E<2> draws the arm E in until it engages the projection D<4> and locks the flap in the closed position. The hopper is provided with a coarse screen A<3>, and a shoot below the hopper is fitted with a regulating-slide. A hopper with two or more compartments may be used, so that while one is emptying another can be filled. The compartments A<6>, Fig. 3, are provided with two balanced flaps A<7>, fixed on a rocking bar K, Fig. 4, carrying a notched quadrant K<2> with which a spring detent L operated by means of a cord E<3> engages.
