Abstract

8029. Patterson, F. M. April 2. Axles.-A rod for use in the manufacture of axles &c. is formed by stamping radial incisions B in a rod, such that a channel at the bottom of each incision, when the rod is rolled or passed through dies to close the incisions, remains adjacent to the core, which is intact throughout, and the surface of the rod is continuous. To increase the elasticity further, the rod may be given a twist, preferably such that the whole pitch occurs in twice the length of the axle. Where the bearing portions occur, the rod is welded solid. Fig. 12 shows the application to a railway-car axle. Axles for road wagons and carriages are similarly made.
