W7 ith these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and arrangement of part-s the preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a perspective view of a section or blank from which the bolster may be constructed; Fig. 2 is a side-elevation of a bolster body complete; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken longitudinally of the bolster body; 4 is an'end elevation of the complete bolster; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a modification. l
The first step in the production of my improved bolster consists in the rolling of a section or blank l, as shown in Fig. l. This section which may be readily rolled in a manner well known to those familiar with the art of metal rolling, consists of an upwardly opening continuous channel member 2 having side walls or flanges 3, 3, extending up from one side of the web 4 of the section. From the lower side of this web and offset from the outer face of the flanges 3, 3, of the upper channel member are the depending flanges arranged in pairs 5, 5 and 6, 6, respectiively, forming downwardly opening channel members of which the web 4 forms the basis. The rolled strip of the character described is then out into sections of a length suitable for the proposed bolster. This section is then placed in a suitable shearing press by which the downwardly extending Specification of Letters Patent.

During the shear- 'ling and bending down operation the upper or pressure member of the bolster body formed by the upwardly extending channel fianges 3, 3, may be heldV against bending or -distortion in any suitable manner and if defsired the ends of the bolster may be clamped -so that in the bending down of the tension vmembers 7 the metal of said tension members may be stretched as well as bent. When the vbolster body'is brought to the proper shape i as shown in Fig. 2 by such bending and stretching, the pressure member and the depending tension members may be reinforced land secured together by short struts 8, 8, of -I-beam or other suitable construction, rolled, cast or forged and riveted both to the pressure member and the tension members as shown. The body may then be suitably 'bored and provided with the usual equipment of center plate and side bearing plates as desired. In some instances it may be desirable instead of stretching the tension members 7 as above described, to merely bend the same to shape. In such case the sectionor blank from which the body is to be formed may be of greater length than the -length of the complete body and in the bendingoperation the extremities of the body will be drawn up together so that the pressure member 'formed by the channel flanges 3, 3, and the portion of the web 4 between them may be slightly bowed upwardly at the center. 'In such case, however, the struts 8, S, when in position will securely hold the pressure and tension members rigidly together and in proper relative position. If desired the ends of the bolster may be reduced by shearing the flanges of the tension members either along the lines A or B, Fig. 2, and also the flanges of the pressure members along the line C Fig. 2. In the modified form, Fig. 6, the tension member may have the additional strengthening flanges 9-9 at their outer edges.
From the above description, it will be seen that the complete truck bolster comprises a pressure member of continuous channel form throughout the length of the bolster by which great strength in the pressure factor of the bolster is secured, and ,the tension members 7 are also of continuous channel form, the side walls or flanges of thechannels extending downwardly and therefore imparting the greatest possible ,tensile strength and resistance to tension stress on thebolster. It is obvious that this construction may be employed in other relations, as for example, for a car sill or side frame, but in any event it is peculiarly adapted to resist the strains and stressesboth vertical and lateral to which car parts are ordinarily subjected. l/Vhile yI have herein described and shown a particular embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that-the same may be altered in details and in the arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
`1. A truck bolster formed `of a rolled section having a pressure member formed of a continuous upwardly opening channel portion and a ktension member Iformed of `a continuous downwardly ,opening Ychannel member, said tension memberfbeing sheared from and bent downwardly intermediate the ends of said section.
2. A truck ybolster formed of a .rolled section havinga pressure member consisting of a continuous upwardly opening channel portion and a tension member formed of parallel continuous downwardly opening channel members extending .alongeither side of said pressure member, said tension vmember being sheared from the rolled section intermediate the ends thereof and bent downwardly to form trussmembers.
8. A ktruck bolster formed from a single rolled section comprising a continuous upwardly opening channel member extending centrally of said section and a tension member formed of continuous Adownwardly opening channel `members extending longitudinally along either side of said pressure member, said tension member being sheared from' trally along said section, and continuous ,downwardly 4opening channel portions tending longitudinally upon either side of said upwardly disposed channel portion, Asaid downwardly opening channel portions ,being sheared from the body of the section intermediate the ends thereof and bent downwardly to form ,tension members.
`5. Aftruckbolster formed of a rolled ch annel having a pressure member formed of a single `continuous upwardly opening channel portionextending centrally from end to end of said section, and a .tension member formed Eof .two continuous downwardly opening channel members on either sideof said pressure member, said tension members being sheared from and bent downwardly intermediatetheends of said section, and a strengthv ening member interposed between said pressure and tension membersadjacent the center .of the 4bolster body.
6. A truck -bolster formed .of a rolled section havinga vpressure ymember formed ,of a :continuous yupwardly opening channel portion, anda tension member formed of cony.tinuous ldownwardly opening channel portions yupon -either side of said pressure member, said Jtension members being sheared from and bent downwardly intermediate the jends of said section and parallel strengthening mem-bersspaced apart and extending `between the `Central :portion .of said pressure ,and tension members.
