Electro - magnetic switches.-In electric systems for lighting, heating, cooling, and ventilating railway carriages and other vehicles, where two storage batteries are employed of which one is being charged while the other is " floating " in the circuit in series with a resistance, the electro-magnetic switch for interchanging periodically the positions of the two batteries is of the rotary ratchet-actuated type with a solenoid placed vertically and a core controlled by gravity. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the switch consists of a disk 55 carrying two semicircular contact segments 56, 57 which slide beneath four brushes 50, 51, 52, 53. The brushes 50 and 52 are respectively connected to the two batteries 28, 27; the brush 53 is connected directly to the dynamo terminal 7 and the brush 51 through a resistance 33. The disk is actuated by upward strokes of a solenoid-core 58, which has a pivoted pawl 62 striking against pins 63. The solenoid-core is coned and provided with non-magnetic pins 59<a> to strike against a magnetic bushing 163. The stroke may be arranged to produce a quarter-revolution of the disk or less. The solenoid-core may actuate the disk at the downstroke instead of the up-stroke. A brush 64 is added, if desired, to short-circuit the resistance 33. In another form of switch shown in Fig. 4, there are four stationary segmental contacts and two rotating brushes 56<b>, 57b.
