Abstract

4424. Nichol, J. C. Feb. 22. Capillary-action lubricators.-A lubricator for shaft hangers and other bearings comprises a well 4, formed on the lower bearing 2, containing a wick 9 which passes round the shaft in a recess formed in the upper bearing 5. The well is closed by a lid 11 having a curved part 12 covering the wick, and an apron 13 which deflects the wick to the underside of the shaft. The meeting edges of the bearings 2, 5 are bevelled downwardly and inwardly to prevent the escape of oil. A projection 14 on the cover prevents the wick from rotating with the shaft. Oil-catching pockets or grooves 16 are formed at the end of the bearing and commucate with return passages 17. In a modification, a well is formed at each end of a hanger bearing, and is closed by a hinged lid secured by a spring catch. The apron 13 is replaced by a spring finger, formed with a clip to hold the wick.
