Abstract

4206. Gore, H. C. Feb. 19. Ornamenting.-Consists in the following combination process for lettering on glass. The surface D, Fig. 3, is painted with an opaque background; transparent letters E<1> are formed by removing parts of the background by a solvent applied over stencils; and crumpled metal foil E' is applied to the transparent parts before the background is dry, or a transparent colour varnish E is applied to the transparent parts after the background has dried and the metal foil is applied to the varnish coating before it is dry. The stencils used comprise two leaves G, G', Fig. 4, which complete each other for letters like 0; the leaves are connected to each other by creases or hinges K, K<1> and have flaps L to facilitate manipulation. According to the Provisional Specification, the transparent lettering may also be obtained by printing. A thin sheet of rubber is mounted on a strawboard, the letters are drawn on the rubber or on a light material temporarily applied to it, the letters are cut out through the rubber, the lettering background thus formed is secured to a printing-board, and the opaque colour is applied by a printer's roller.
