Abstract

4079. McAlpine, T. M. Feb. 18. Wells, shafts, and tunnels.-In a lining for a tunnel, shaft, or like tubular structure, of the type in which a number of interlocking rings are each composed of a number of abutting, intertongued and grooved, concrete segments reinforced by metal hoops, the reinforcing metal hoops are embedded in ring grooves formed in the abutting surfaces of the rings within the thickness of the segments. In the form shown in Fig. 16, each segment a is formed with a tongue a<2> engaging a groove a<1> in the adjacent ring ; and a reinforcing- hoop of metal b is situated in the groove. The hoop b may be of any desired section, and the abutting surfaces of consecutive rings modified accordingly. The segments of one ring may have protruding longitudinal reinforcing-bars f to engage with the segments of the adjoining ring. A double lining may be provided as shown in Fig. 13, where the space between the linings is filled with bitumen or the like, and the hoop e adapted to serve as a distance-piece. Some of the rings of segments may be thicker to give local strength and to prevent longitudinal flow of water and the creeping of clay at the back of the lining.
