Abstract
4036. Hardy, G. H. Feb. 18. Fluid - friction type. - Relates to rotary pumps, of the type described in Specification 4733/79, applicable also as motors and mixing- machines, operating by fluid friction, and consists in a modification of the pump described in Specification 8876/07, the rotor vanes being dispensed with. A rotor R is provided with a number of parallel peripheral grooves 1, 2, 3, 4 into which project fixed abutments B<1>, the abutments in adjacent grooves being diametrically opposite. The blocks B<1> fill about one-quarter of the length of the grooves, and serve as supplementary bearings for the rotor. Tangential inlet and outlet passages are formed in the casing through which the fluid is circulated by fluid friction aided by centrifugal force on rotation of the shaft. In the case of a motor the fluid drives the rotor. Alternate grooves 1, 3 and 2, 4 are connected by passages P formed in an inner casing, a common discharge pipe being provided.
