Abstract

3787. Shaw, C. Feb. 16. [Cognate Application, 18,515/10.] Door holders.-In one form the stay or holder comprises a bar 1, Figs. 2 and 4, pivoted by a universal joint 8 to the top of a casing 2 let into the edge of the door, and having at its lower end a knob 4 adapted to engage a slotted keeper 19, Fig. 5, screwed to the door frame. A catch 12 holds the bar in its operative position. Locking-mechanism may be provided to secure the stay against operation from outside, such mechanism being located in an extension of the case mortised into the edge of the door and comprising a key-operated bolt adapted to engage an extension of the bar beyond the pivot to prevent the knob from being raised to the wide portion 17 of the keeper slot. In this construction, an ordinary latch for holding the door closed may be arranged in the casing, the keeper being provided with a striking-plate therefor. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the stay-bar 1 is on the end of a spindle 36 rotatably and slidably mounted within the casing and under the control of a spring 42, which returns the stay from its operative position. The bar is drawn from its recess into the position shown in Fig. 12 by means of a hand-lever 46, the end of which is in engagement with the spindle, and afterwards engages a notch 49 on the bar to hold this out until it is tnrned round into engagement with the keeper. In this construction a key-operated plate 50 may be provided to engage a shoulder 53 on the inner end of the spindle to lock the stay in operative position. In a modification of this form, shown in Fig. 16, an ordinary door-bolt 61 is mounted within the spindle, and can be shot into the keeper when the door is closed, and the stay-bar can be locked by a hand-operated slide 71 mounted on the end of the bolt 61, and adapted to engage a flat portion 72 on the spindle to prevent its rotation. The slide 71 can be arranged for external key-operation. In another modification, the stay-bar itself is hollow and contains a sliding bolt, which can be moved by hand outwards into engagement with a hole in the keeper to prevent the knob on the stay from being raised out of the latter.
