Abstract

3516. Vincent, J. G., and Benner, R. E. Feb. 23, 1909, [Convention date]. Column-printing a r r a n g e - ments line-spacing mechanism. -In adding and listing machines such as those of the type described in Specification 15,532/06 and 28,686/06, adapted to print a column of identifying or designating numbers which do not require to be totalled, and a column of items, a particular construction of means is described for (1) positively reciprocating the carriage after the preliminary release of a special locking-device, between any two adjacent columnar positions, the machine being capable of listing items &c. in a number of vertical columns ; (2) (a) splitting the machine between the second and third banks and locking the righthand section of two banks, thus split, against depression, in order to distinguish on the printed record between identifying-numbers and items, and (b) disabling and positively locking the linespacing mechanism, which is a modification of that described in Specification 16,800/08 ; both operations being performed when the carriage is positioned so as to allow printing to take place in the column of identifying-numbers. Means are also described for (3) disabling and locking the carriage-reciprocating mechanism by the depression of a special key, when the machine is required to perform single-column work. The invention is described with special reference to adding-machines of the Burroughs type such as are described in Specifications 17,126/93 and 21,268/97. Specifications 1810108 and 16,800/08 are also referred to. (1) The carriage is reciprocated by means of a link 15, Fig. 3, and crank arm 16, which is given a series of intermittent half rotations by the fullstroke sector 311, Fig. 2, through a link 310, an arm 110 attached to the shaft 100, ratchet-device 20, 21, 23, Fig. 5, crown-wheel 19, and pinion 18. A locking-device 41, Fig. 5, for the reciprocating- mechanism is released by the initial movement of the shaft 100. Any one of a series of stop-fingers 7, Fig. 3, can be caused to engage a notch 14<c> in a projection of the bar 14, to which the link 15 is attached, and thus the carriage can be reciprocated between any two adjacent columnar positions. (2) When the carriage is in its right-hand position, (a) a cam-shaped projection 50, Fig. 3, rocks a lever 51 and disables the adding-mechanism by means of an arm 55<a>, Fig. 4, and a link. Attached to the sleeve 64, the axis of which forms also the pivot for the arm 55<a>, is an arm 62 carrying a cross-rod 61, on which is mounted a bail 60. Thus the rocking of the lever 51 depresses the bail, which effects the splitting of the machine between the seventh and eighth banks from the left by uncoupling, in the usual manner, the corresponding adjacent latches. A connexion 65, 71 is simultaneously operated by the crossrod 61 and effects the locking of the two righthand banks of the machine. These two banks, which are usually employed to denote cents, are, therefore, not used in printing the designating- numbers, which can thus be clearly distinguished from the items. (b) A stud 14<f>, Fig. 3, disengages the line-spacing dog 92<c> and locks the slide 87. (3) When the carriage is in the adding position, the depression of a key 25, Fig. 2, rocks a lever 28 at the base of the machine, the forked end of which embraces a bell-crank lever 30, Fig. 4. In this position of the carriage, one of a series of holes 35 in the crown-wheel 19 will be opposite to, and will allow to enter, the projection 34 of the lever ; the other branch 32 of the lever will disengage the pawl 21 from the ratchet-wheel 23, Fig. 5.
