Abstract

3437. Stiepel, K. Feb. 11. Processes and materials for treating hides and skins. - Chrome-tanned leather for use in making glue is detanned by treatment with slightly acidulated water at temperatures up to 100‹ C. The leather is, for example, immersed in hot water containing 0À2 per cent of hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, and the temperature is raised to 50-100‹ C. Or detanning may be effected by placing the leather in cold dilute hydrochloric acid and adding salts which form insoluble compounds with the sulphate in the leather, such as barium chloride.
