Abstract
3287. Bogner, H. Feb. 10, 1909, [Convention date]. G r a t e s; mechanical stoking.-A rotary grate of the kind comprising two or more concentric annular grates revolving about a vertical axis with adjacent grates moving in opposite directions has special means for feeding fuel to the grate at different points in such a manner that fresh fuel on one grate lies opposite incandescent fuel on an adjacent grate; means are also provided for removing clinker, and for preventing fuel from passing from one grate to another. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two grates a, b formed of radial bars c, d rotate in opposite directions. Fuel is fed to the grate sections by hoppers e,f, the hopper e being shown separately in Fig. 9. A valve f<1> serves to regulate the supply of fuel from the hopper c; and the thickness of the fuel is regulated by a sliding plate g. The hopper f is provided with a similar plate h. Strikers or ploughs l, m for removing clinker are arranged at the ends of the fuel beds of the grates a, b respectively, and sweep the clinkers into hoppers n, o. A modified form of striker is shown in Fig. 5. It consists of a pivoted member v capable of turning about an axis w to remove clinker adhering to the grate into the hopper x. Fig. 7 shows a radially-arranged striker 1 adapted to pile up the clinker upon hinged segments 2, Fig. 6, forming part of the grate. The segments 2, which are pivoted at 21, are held up by a rod 5, the lower end of which is provided with a roller 3 adapted to run on a circular track 4. Upon the roller 3 reaching a dip 10 in the track 4, the rod 5 descends and dumps the segments 2. Tunnels r, Fig. 1, supported on piers s cover-in a portion of each grate; the remaining portions are separated by a ring r<2> of refractory material, and serve to prevent fuel from passing from one grate to another. An arch r<3> covers the front of the furnace and may form a support for the front header of a water-tube boiler. The rails c<1>, d<1>, Fig. 1, support carriages or wheeled supports on which the grates are mounted, the carriages being driven by ratchet and worm-wheel gearing.
