Abstract

3113. Warwick Machinery Co., [General Electric Co.]. Feb. 8. Regulating.-An emergency stop-gear is fitted to turbines, and is operated either by the excessive speed of the turbine or by excess steam pressure at the exhaust or any other part. A throttle valve 11 is normally held open by a trip lever 14 connected by a rod 15 to a lever 17 mounted upon a shaft 18. A second lever 19 upon the shaft 18 engages a trigger 20, whereby the whole gear is normally held up against the action of a spring 23. The trigger 20 may be operated in two ways: (i) by actual contact with a centrifugal governor 24 mounted upon the main shaft 5; and (ii) by a lever 35 operated by a diaphragm situated in a casing 30. This diaphragm is subjected on one side to atmospheric pressure and on the other side to the exhaust pressure, which is transmitted from the turbine through a check valve 26, Fig. 2, and a pipe 27. A pop valve 40 set for a slightly higher pressure than the valve 26 may be connected to the given region of the turbine. The operation of this valve indicates the failure of the automatic device.
