Abstract

2611. Short, H. L., Short, A. E., and Short, H. O. Feb. 2. Planes, construction of; steering and balancing. - Supporting, steering, and balancing planes used on flying-machines are constructed so that the plane is practically flat when passing through the air without any inclination, while when it is placed at an angle to the direction of motion its surface becomes curved. A lateral balancing-plane is shown in Fig. 1 and is constructed of a rigid frame to the leading edge 1 of which a sheet of fabric 4 is firmly fixed. The rear edge of the fabric is connected directly, or through the intermediary of a bar 5, by means of springs 6 to the rear member 2 of the frame. The springs tend to keep the fabric flat but allow it to become curved when the frame becomes inclined to the direction of motion. The fabric, in an alternative arrangement, may be connected to a spring roller at the leading or rear end of the frame, the other edge of the fabric being fixed to the frame, and part or all of the fabric may be elastic. Another modification is shown in Fig. 7, in which the plane 4 passes over a roller 10, the free edge being connected to the fabric through the springs 11. The fabric may be provided with tapered flexible ribs 7, Fig. 1, of the kind described in Specification 23,166/09.
