SCQRING ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING PRESSES. APPLICAHON FILED SEPT. I2. 1918.

Specification of Letters Patent.
s rar Fatentecl Apr.
Application filed September 12, 1918. Serial No. 253596.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDVARD A. Cnooxax, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident ofthe city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoring Attachments for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description, rcf erence being had to the accom panying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scoring attachments for printing presses, one of the objects being to provid a device of this kind adapted to score the paper and at the same time perform the functions of a gripping device for securing the paper to the platen during the printing operation. Another object is to produce a simple scoring device having its scoring elements arranged to form a highly desirable combination of scores in a sheet of paper to be used as a book cover. A further object is to provide a scoring attachment comprising a few simple elements which'may be readily adjusted to change the relative positions of the scoring blades. Another object is to produce a scoring attachment of this kind adapted to be adj ustably secured to a printing press and adapted to occupy operative positions at a right angle to each other.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; however, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations'and modifications which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. c
Figure I is a fragmentary view of a portion of a printing press equipped with a scoring attachment embodying the features of this invention.
Fig. II is a detail view of the scoring attachment.
Fig. III is a. side elevation of the at.- tachment.
Fig. IV is an end view thereof.
Fig. -V is adetail view of one of the scoring blades.
Fig. V1 is a detail view of one of the separator bars.
To illustrate the manner of attaching the scoring device to a printing press 1 have shown a platen. or sheet-receiving table, A provided with ears B. an oscillatory bar C provided with pivot members D mounted in the ears B,and a pair of gripper arms E adj ustably mounted on the bar C. The arms E are arranged at a right angle to the bar C, and said bar is preferably provided with longitudinal slots 1 for the reception of bolts 2 whereby the arms E are adjustab ly secured to the bar C. All of these elements may formpart of an ordinary printing press, the gripper arms E being ordinarily used to secure large sheets of paper to the platen A. It will be observed that the arms E rigidly secured to the bar C. may b turned on the axis of pivot members D so as to move toward and away from the platen A. F designates a sheet of paper mounted on the platen and positioned to he engaged by the printing type (not shown).
The scoring attachment herein shown comprises a marginal frame having longitudinal members 3 and 4, and end members 5 and 6. One end of the longitudinal frame-member l is recessed to receive a tongue 5 (Figs. H and III) projecting from the end member The opposite end of the longitudinal frame member is provided with a tongue 4 (Figs. ll, Ill and IV) extending into the end member 6. The scoring attachment shown in the drawings is provided with four scoring blades 7 surrounded by the marginal frame and ar ranged longitudinally thereof. Separator bars 8 arranged longitudinally of the frame are interposed between the scoring blades 7. The several scoringblades and separator bars are detachably secured to the frame by means of screws 9 arranged transversely of the frame and passing through said blades and separator bars. To receive the screws 9, perforations 7 are formed in each scoring blade 7, as shown in Fig. V, and each separator bar 8 is provided with perforations 8. The head of each screw 9 engages the longitudinal frame member 4:, and the threaded ends of screws are mounted in the longitudinal frame memher 3.
The scoring blades and separator bars are thus detachably secured to the frame, and they can be readily removed and replaced to locate the-scoring blades in difi'crcnt positoo tions. Any desired number of scoring blades and separator bars may be used, but in scoring paper book covers I prefer to use four scoring blades, arranged approximately as herein shown, so as to produce four transverse scores across the sheet of paper to be used as a cover.
To morefirmly secure the scoring blades and separator bars in the marginal frame, the ends of each scoring blade are recessed shown at 10 (Fig. V) to receive the tongues 5 and 6 which extend from the end members of the marginal frame, and each separator bar 8 is recessed as shown at 10 (F ig. VI) to receive the same tongues. A. back web 11, preferably made of sheet metal (Figs. 1 and HT), is secured to the longitudinal frame by means of screws 12 threaded into the longitudinal frame member 3. The scoring blades and separator bars engage the back web 11 at one side of the frame, and the scoring edges of the blades 7 project beyond the opposite side of said frame. 13 designates screws securing the end frame member 6 to the tongues 3' and 4' which extend from the longitudi-' nal frame members 3 and 4:. It will be ob served that the various elements of the scoring attachment can be very easily taken apart, but when these elements are assembled they are very securely held in position by means of the transverse screws 9, the back web 11, and also by the interlocking connections between the marginal frame and the ends of the scoring blades and separator bars. In Fig. I I have shown the scoring device attached to a printing press so asto engage the sheet of paper F on the platen A. One of the gripper arms '15 may be provided with a longitudinal slot 14: for the reception of screws 15 whereby the scoring attachment is secured to said arm. The scoring attachment lies at a right angle to the arm E, and the screws 15 may be moved longitudinally of the slot 14 to locate the attachment in different positions relative to the platen. The frame member 5 of the scoring attachment has a shoulder- 16 which engages one of the straight longitudinal edges of the slotted, arm E.
The scoring attachment can also be secured to the pivotally mounted bar C,. instead of being secured to the slotted arm E which lies at a right angle to said bar. A connecting plate 17 (Figs. I, II and III) is preferably used to secure the scoring attachment to the pivotally mounted bar C. This connecting plate may be secured to the frame member 5 by means of the screws 15, as shown in Figs. II and III, and said connecting plate preferably has a slot 18 adapted to register with either of the slots 1 in the pivoted bar C. The scoring device may be attached to the bar C as indicated by dot and dash lines in Fig. I, and in this event. the adjacent arm E is preferably re moved from the bar '0, and the bolt 2 used in securing said arm may also be used to attach the connecting plate 17 to the bar C. The connccting'pl ate 17 is not used when the screws 15 are employed to secure the scoring device to arm E, as shown at the upper portion of Fig. 1. However, when the scoring device is secured to bar C as shown by dot and dash lines in Fig. I, the plate 17 is attached by screws 15 (Figs. II and III),.and it then forms a detachable extension having a slot 18 adapted to register with either slot 1 (Fig. I). This enables the scoring device to be substituted for one of the arms E.
