Abstract
1908. Hazen, M. W. Sept. 14, 1909. Line-spacing mechanism ; paper-carriages ; alining for impression; printing-point indicators.-Relates more particularly to the folding typewriter described in Specification 21,006/09. (1) The line-spacing pawl 23, Fig. 4, is pivoted at 24 to the line-spacing lever 20, which is journaled on the platen spindle 21, and is held against a stop 22<a> by a curved spring. The pawl is normally clear of the ratchetwheel 27, being held by a spring 25 against the stop 22<a>, but, when the lever 20 is swung, the pawl is first turned by the spring 25 into engagement with the ratchet-wheel, and then turns the platen. The spacing-movement is arrested by a pin 28 on the pawl being jammed between an adjustable stop 29 and a recess 34 in the lever 20. The stop 29 is pivoted at 30 and is provided with a setting-knob and is held in either of its positions by a flat spring 32. The ratchet-wheel is provided with a detent consisting of a pin 37 on a lever 35, which is pressed upwards by a spring, and is provided with a release-lever 40 having notches 42, 43 adapted to engage a pin 39. (2) To compensate for the decreasing tension of the carriage-driving spring, the carriage is mounted to move with more friction at the beginning of the travel than at the end. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the front rail 57 is mounted at one end on buttons 58 and at the other on rollers 60. (3) The aliner is formed with V-projections 49, Figs. 5 and 7, arranged at the printing-line and adapted to engage the heads of the type-levers, the aliner being secured by legs 46 to the shiftable carriage-bed, so that in all the shift positions, the aliner engages the type-head near to the type which is being used. (4) The printing- point indicator 51, Fig. 7, is secured behind the aliner and is formed with a pointer 52 and with a shoulder 53 which registers with the lower edges of the characters. The parts 51, 53 are respectively used for setting as regards the line-spacing and the letter-spacing movements.
