Abstract

200. Bjorkman, E. L. Jan. 4. Machines for making boxes. Pasteboard, veneer, or other boxes, shaped as shown in Fig. 1, are made in a machine provided with an intermittently-rotated matrix, round which the frame of the box is wound. A strip 4 is fed from a magazine 6 to a matrix 9, to which it is held by a clamping-jaw 10, Fig. 7, operated by a projection 21 on a slide 20. The matrix is then rotated for one revolution. During this rotation, a roller presses the strip 4 against the matrix, and a paste cup, carried by the roller support, supplies adhesive to that part of the strip 4 to which a strip 2a is to be applied. Meanwhile, a cover-piece 3 has been fed from a magazine 38 by a slide 39, and clamped between a counter-block 45 and the slide, pointed pieces sliding in the counter-block have transfixed the piece 3, the slide 39 has been returned, and the counter-block has been advanced so that the piece 3 is forced against the end of the matrix at the instant its rotation is stopped. Strips 2a, 2b are then fed from a magazine 66 to the matrix, to which they are held by a clamping-jaw 57, operated by a projection 58 on the slide 20, and by a slide 59, 60. The matrix 9 and the block 45 are then rotated. After about three-eighths of a revolution, a pasted paper strip 5, Fig. 1<b>, is forced by a roller against the strips 2a, 2<b>, so that it is carried with them, one edge of the strip being forced into contact with the cover 3 by folders. At the end of a revolution, the block 45 is withdrawn and ceases to rotate, but the motion of the matrix continues. A slide 97, or a sector of a wheel &c., is then advanced, until a chamber in it is located opposite the matrix. The box is then pushed into this chamber by plates 112 fixed to the slide 20, and is retained there by teeth caused to project through openings in the walls of the chamber. The end 9b of the matrix is caused to move in unison with the plates 112 by means of connexions 9<c>. The slide 97 is then withdrawn into position for receiving a bottom 1, which has been fed from a magazine 117 by a slide 118. The bottom 1 is then pushed into place by a piston 125, Figs 22 and 23, and pins 126, through a funnel consisting of guide-plates 144, 144<x>, 145, 145x. The latter pair are connected by springs 147. As the piston moves, the guide - plates are moved towards the box against the action of the spring 143, and their edges pass within the chamber formed by the strip 5. After the bottom 1 has been inserted, the paper strip is folded down on it by two pairs of folders. The slide 97 carrying the finished box is then moved forwards, and fixed pins, taking into grooves in the slide, force the box out of the chamber.
