Abstract

197. Willson, T. L. Jan. 4. Buoys. - The carbidechambers of automatic acetylene-gas generators, more particularly those for use with buoys, are provided with an enlarged lower portion which allows the carbide to expand and are also fitted with hinged grates for supporting the carbide in the chamber, and for facilitating the removal of residual lime. The buoy A has a central tubular memoer B the upper part 10 of which together with a lower larger tube 11 forms the carbide - chamber. The bottom 12 of this chamber has a central opening, provided with two hinged semicircular grates 13, which are connected by arms 25, 26 with a tubular member 19. The tube 19 is moved axially by a nut 21 on the threaded part 20 abutting on the cover 22. When the nut is near the end of the rod 19, the grates are open and the residual lime is discharged. As the nut is screwed on, the grates are raised to the closed position. The counterweight 29 and partition 30 have openings 31, 32 controlled by valves 33, 34 carried on a rod 35 passing up through the hollow member 19. The valve 34 has a central opening 39 which allows a gradual inflow and outflow of water, and is adapted to be lowered to permit a quick discharge of the spent lime. The generation of gas proceeds in the usual manner, the gas being passed to a purifier in the cover and thence to the lamp. Specification 18,106/04 is referred to.
