Index type-bar and typewheel machines with large printing-surfaces for tickets etc.; alining for impression. - Printing- plates are arranged in series on several straight, curved, or other carriers disposed close together and independently adjustable to bring any printing- plate into position for co-operation with a travelling printing-device, comprising an inking-roller and an impression platen. The printing-plates face the adjacent carriers so that all, or nearly all, the printing- plates are hidden from view. A scale or other indicating means may be provided to facilitate adjustment ; preferably an indicator is automatically set by the carriers. The carriers may be fixed in adjusted position by individual or common means. Fig. 1 shows the carriers as sliding bars e guided on an horizontal base b and normally retracted against an abutment b<1> by counterweights d. Each bar carries a series of printing- plates c and is adjustable by means of a handle e<1> to bring any plate into position for co-operation with a travelling printing-device f, which may be of the form described below. In another arrangement, the sliding bars are disposed vertically, and each printing-plate has a recess for engagement by a projection on the printing-device to secure the plate in printing position. Fig. 4 shows the carriers as counterweighted segments e on a shaft b. The segments rest with their handles e' against a vertical wall b<1>, and are secured in printing position by means of a spring detent i and a notched counterweighted leverp, which is advanced by engagement of the selected segment against an abutment o on the lever. The detent i is released by the printing-device f in its return movement, through an arm l, shaft m, and gearing m<1>, k<1>, and the lever p returns until the abutment o meets a fixed abutment r. The wall b<1> is provided with an index table over which moves an indicator w<1> on a rack v actuated by gearing t, s from the lever p. Paper-carriages ; platen-impression arrangements; inking-roller arrangements.-The printing-devicef, Figs. 1, 2<a>, and 4, is adjustable along a guideway k, and comprises a rear abutment f<1> for the selected carrier e, a platen z, and an inking-roller f<2> carried by the platen. The platen is in wedge engagement with a rack y actuated by means of a pinion o and a handle g, and advances with the rack until stopped by an abutment x on the member f<1>, whereupon the further movement of the rack effects impression by means of the wedge action.
