Abstract

Screw propellers.-An inner screw propeller 4 rotates in a direction opposite that of the outer propeller 8, which comprises a series of axiallyalined frusto-conical shells with internal screw surfaces 9. This propelling-arrangement is suitable for air-ships, the air discharged centrifugally or tangentially by the propeller 4 being deflected downwards by the propeller 8. The propeller 4 is mounted on the shaft 5, and the propeller 8 is attached by spiders 12 to the hubs 11 of the sleeve 13, and these shafts are driven in opposite directions by the bevel gearing shown. The airship is driven horizontally by tilting the axis of the propeller. To permit this, the bearing 6 is mounted on trunnions 17 and the bearing 7 on a cross-head arranged to move in curved tracks 18 concentric with the trunnions. A screw 19 swiveljointed to the cross-head of the bearing 7 controls the tilting.
