Abstract

28,609. Glaser, C., and Muller, G. J. Dec. 7. Salt, common.-Brine is purified by adding, first, sodium carbonate enough to precipitate a small percentage of the calcium present and carry down any metallic salts, second, barium chloride to precipitate sulphates, third, sodium carbonate enough to precipitate calcium but not magnesium, fourth, sodium hydrate or sodium carbonate and a small quantity of sodium hydrate to precipitate magnesium, and fifth, hydrochloric acid sufficient to neutralize the solution. The first two reagents may be added together, the precipitate being rejected. The order in which the calcium and magnesium are precipitated may be transposed. The barium, calcium, and magnesium precipitates are washed and dried.
