Abstract

Liquids, treating; cells; connexions; electrodes; electrolytes, circulating. - Water or other liquid is purified by the action of an electric current, which is periodically reversed, and is started and stopped synchronously with the flow of liquid. The electrodes are connected in circuit with a commutator 26, a motor 29, and a switch 23 actuated by a spring-valve 21 in the supply pipe. The motor is geared to the commutator so as to reverse the polarity of the electrodes at intervals of, say, 30 minutes. A number of aluminium electrodes 1, Fig. 4, are spaced in grooved longitudinal plates 5 of glass or other insulating-material closed by side plates 6 of glass &c., the space between the electrode chamber so formed and the casing 7 being filled with cement or the like. The ends of the casing 7 are closed by removable heads 9, 11, Fig. 1, the upper end having an inlet 10, the area of cross-section of which is equal to the total crosssectional area of the passages between the electrodes. The head 11 carries an outlet which communicates with a T-fitting having a side wash-out pipe 14 controlled by a valve 15 and also connected to a valve-controlled pipe 16, which may lead to the service pipe, but is preferably connected to a vertical mixing- chamber 18 of greater cross-sectional area than that of the inlet 10, in which the liquid flows at a diminished rate and the action of the gases formed in the electrode chamber is prolonged. The intermediate electrodes 1 are bipolar, only the outer plates having terminals. Any number of units, each consisting of a casing 7 and a mixing-chamber 18, may be connected in series
