Abstract
28,408. Morgan, J. H. Dec. 6. [Cognate Applications, 1683/10, 9311/10, and 11,766/10.] Pulleys. - In pulleys built up of the keystone sections, each section is formed from a strip of metal a provided with a central rib b, or from rolled T- i r o n, having a number of indents c, which, when the strip is bent to its final shape, form mitre joints. One end of each strip is plain and the ends overlap each other and are secured to the boss o f t h e pulley. The boss, which may be in parts, or may be cast as a whole about the portions m, is polygonal to correspond with the number of keystone sections employed. Its ends may be square for the reception of bolts r. Its polygonal faces have recesses for the heads of the bolts q securing together the turned-over portions of the arms f, g. The keystone sections may be formed in parts; for example, the rim portion may be separately attached, the portions f, g, h being then passed through holes in a recessed shroud 7 surrounding the boss, with or without the interposition of a liner z. The employment of a shroud in two parts enables the retaining- bolts- 1 to be placed within the face of the pulley. The inner ends of the arms f, g may be opened somewhat for receiving the turned-over ends of a liner z, which takes the form of a circular bush with an hexagonal projection, the arms and liner being bolted together. Angleplates 2 may be provided at the outer ends of the arms. A separate rim j may be affixed and two or more keystone sections may be combined with a very wide rim having one or more annular grooves. When the rim portions of the keystone sections are formed separately, the arms are bifurcated at their outer ends to receive the central rib of a sectional or continuous rim-piece. In the case of a split pulley, the arm portions overlap and are bolted together. The arm portions f, g of adjacent sections are bolted or riveted together, and in the recesses formed between them are located forgings 10 provided with projections or recesses to engage corresponding recesses or projections in the arm-ends and rim. The inner ends of the arms f, g may be welded together.
