Abstract

26,097. Love, W. C. Nov. 11. Propelling and steering by reciprocating plates &c. -Aerial and marine vessels are propelled by means of reciprocating surfaces which, on the forward thrust, offer diminished resistance to the air or water, either by closing down on the propeller shaft after the manner of an umbrella, or by the opening of valves in the surfaces. Propellers of the umbrella type may comprise canvas attached to steel ribs, Fig. 1 ; or blades hinged to a ring C and adapted in closing to overlap, as shown in Fig. 4. Or the propeller may be of the shape shown in Fig. 6. The ribs or blades are guided as in an umbrella, by rods connected to a runner D on the shaft A. To prevent such propellers from turning inside out, a second series of rods may be connected to a second runner in front of the runner D. A rod B may be employed to assist the air or water to open the propeller, or a stop may be provided on the shaft A to prevent the propeller from closing completely. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the surface comprises flaps to open inwards on the forward thrust. The direction of the shaft A may be varied for steering.
